The same day I left for the 2017 Eastern Sectional Figure Skating Championships in Indian Trail, North Carolina, the qualifier for the US Championships in Kansas City, I had a 6.006 (Intro to Algorithms) midterm later that day. Heres a throwback to last years Eastern Sectionals, as I was vying for a spot on the Junior level, though I had the comfort of the good ol P/NR. Getting myself mentally and physically fit to compete was one giant monster in and of itself, but preparing for that one examand finshing up my other assignments for my other 4 classeswas another beast entirely. I thought it might be more fun to show you my week in pictures (mostly taken from my Snapchat story), so here we go. The day before I left, I had to squeeze in as much training as I could. Fun fact, MIT Figure Skating Club has ice time at the Johnson Arena from 8-9:30a every morning, so thats been super convenient for me to maximize my training time, especially on days where I dont have enough time between classes to train with my coaches and trek over to the Skating Club of Boston, a 20-minute Uber-ride away. Heres me at one of the clubs rinks, with the ice all to myselfone of the perks of skating in the middle of the day. The night before I left, I spent the entire night finishing a 6.006 pset. I used 1 slack day (were given 5 for the term), and finished and turned the pset in 1 minute before the (extended) deadline. Cutting it close! The next day, I went to one of my morning classes, went back to my room to pack, took a quick nap, and set off for the airport.   On the flight, I was lucky enough to sit in a row with an empty middle seat. Score! Alas, there was not much time to rest on the flight. I got right to work studying for the 6.006 exam. I arranged to take it on Monday, but I knew I wouldnt have much time to study once I arrived in North Carolina. Charlotte, here we are! Landed right as the sun was setting. From the airport, I wasnt able to call an Uber as I usually do, so I got on a taxi instead. With rush-hour traffic and the Saints v. Panthers game going on that night as well, it took over an hour (and $100) to get to the ice arena in Indian Trail. Lucikly, I was able to get there just in time for my official practice. After that, I checked into my hotel room, and it was glorious. The first night I had a king bed all to myself. The next night I switched into a room with a hot tub. My mom did great with the bookings. I then grabbed dinner at Applebees, just right behind the hotel. Steak it was, with green beans and bacon cheddar potatoes. After that feast, it was back to studying. The next morning, I trekked outside to grab some lunch. It was a whopping 77 degrees. In comparison, it was in the 40s back in Boston. Luckily, I did bring shorts.   There was also a grocery store in the same plaza. Dangerous, because, well, more food. I had a short warmup practice at the rink, and went back to my room, took a nap, got some more food, and prepared for the first segment of the competition the short program, the last event of the evening. My short ended up going well. Aside from a minor deduction on one of my jumping elements, I performed everything else as I had practiced. I ended up getting a personal-best score and tied with the skater in first place. But a higher technical score broke the tie, which put me in second. Top four advance to Nationals, so I was in a good spot going into the second segment of the competition the free skate. But first, it was time to fuel up for tomorrow. Back at Applebees, since it was the only place nearby open at 12a. Same meal too, because that steak was good last night. Afterwards, I needed to go pick up a new toothbrush, so I walked to the nearest gas station to pick one up. The cashier was so sweet and I had a lovely conversation with her. I told her I was here for the competition and have been having a great time here so far. She told me to come stop by tomorrow if I have a chance to let her know how the competition went. The next day, I went through the same routine. For the free skate, I was really nervous going in. I had a rough 6-minute warmup, and was last to skate. Waiting for all the other skaters and hearing their marks, I tried to keep calm and carry on as best I could. I told myself to trust the training Id put into this event, and treat it as any program Ive done in practice. It worked. I went out there and performed a clean program. By the end, I was in awe that I had skated the program that I did. I ended up with a personal-best free skating mark, and a first-place finish. My professor for Sport as Performance emailed out to our entire class about the competition. Huge shoutout to my professoryoure the best! Not too much time to celebrate though. I had a flight back to Boston that night as well. 6.006 exams dont disappear from thin air either. Still had to stress study algorithms on the plane once again. But a gingerbread latte from a Starbucks at the airport definitely made it more manageable. Once I got back to my fraternity, I found that my big had left me a care package of fruit snacks and chocolate-covered goodies. What a nice surprise, thanks! Then it was time for bed. Boy did I miss my mattress topper and pillow. The next morning, I went for some food in Boston with a friend and then it was back at the MIT libraries, specifically Barker Engineering Library, one of my favorites. Time to cram some more 6.006. I also had a 6.042 pset due the next day, and headed over to office hours for some help. Once I headed out, it started snowing. 77 degrees to freezing. In between studying for 6.006, working on the 6.042 pset, and finishing a draft for my final paper in my Sport as Performance classall due Mondayworking on a 15-minute talk for 6.UAT due Tuesday, and coding some parts for my project-based seminar, 2.98, due Wednesday, I had one packed day of work. On top of that, there was also a 2-hour exec and a 1-hour chapter meeting for my fraternity to plan out nominations for the upcoming elections. But, as always, food makes things a little better. More specifically, chicken noodle soup, juice, and chocolate, all is good no matter if the printer doesnt print and if it does you dont even understand practice exam solutions in the first place. The next day, it was time for the biggest beast of all, the 6.006 midterm. Post the 2-hour exam, my brain was fried. That was one heck of an exam. As always, food makes things better. The grades for 6.006 came out the next day. I dared not look at it the minute I saw the email pop up and went for a nap instead. Sleep away your problems, an excelent remedy. But alas, after I woke up, my suitemates confronted me and looked at my grades for me. I ended up getting slightly above a 50%. So a bit better than expected? The average was a 56%, so it wasnt as horrendous as it initally seemed. Either way, it was time to move on to my other assignments for my other 4 classes. On we go. Painful and sleep-deprived as it was, I was able to get through the rest of the 3 days before Thanksgiving break, finishing up the rest of my assignments. She mainly believed in spiritual healing and considered Ayurveda as the most beneficial treatment. She was suffering from diabetes type 2 and was obese. She was also a patient of Arthritis and had restricted mobility. She had faced racism during her younger years in the nation for which she had become why restrictive and adamant in her approaches towards Australian. She did not want to stay in the hospital but due to the request of her son and daughter in law, she decided to get admitted. I noticed that she was not cooperating with me as she was not being able to rely on me and on Western education. The racism that she faced in her younger days were restricting her (Birks e al. 2016). She was quite concerned that whether I would be able to follow her cultural traditions. She was not being cooperative and for this reason I was not being able to either start my treatment or diagnose her symptoms closely. She was quite concerned about her autonomy and dignity. The next stage is called the interpreter stage. From the entire incident, I noticed that the patient might have gone through several unexpected and tragic events with Australians in her yester years. For this, she has suffered both mentally and physically. I also realized that this negative feeling would affect the relationship that needs to be developed between me and the patient for effective treatment. Therefore, it was very important for me to develop a therapeutic relationship with her so that I can gain her trust (Scanlon et al. 2016). Developing trust is very important as this would make the patient feel mentally stable and she would co-ordinate and help me with the interventions. I also noticed that she is quite concerned about her cultural traditions and preferences and therefore she is quite concerned about her treatment methods. Therefore in my treatment methods I have to be very careful so that I do not hurt her emotions about her cultural traditions (Sivaraman and Green 2015). At first I tried to cool her down by telling her that the Australian in the early years were insensitive. However with the passing of years the Australians have taken all as their own brothers and sisters. Making her feel comfortable was my primary aim and counseling her about her perceptions about the Australian was extremely necessary to develop trust in me as well as the western Healthcare system. My procedure of listening her every experience with concern and concentration made her feel respected and important and she gradually started relying on me (Cashin et al. 2015). I was gradually being able to develop a relationship where she was able to confide in me and was following my advices properly. I also educated her about the recent advancements that the Western Healthcare system had made which made her quite amazed. At the same time I also told of the benefits of Ayurveda which made her feel that I also respected her cultural preferences. She was quite happy with the discussion and she became ready to help me and corporate with me in the treatment procedures. To this, all her family members were very happy and they completely were amazed about how I was being able to successfully develop relationship with their mother who was very adamant. The next stage is called the reflection in action stage. I started my treatment with the patient first asking for her consent which made her very happy. I first calculated her blood sugar level which was very high at that time. I injected her insulin and provided her with the necessary medication. She was also having wound on her foot due to the effect of diabetes and therefore podologist was called for. I also made her understand about the importance of maintaining the correct diet to properly maintain her weight.I also appointed for a Physiotherapy session with her so that she can be relieved of the pain from her knees as she was also suffering from arthritis (Kyle et al. 2017). It was the patient who told me that my educating her about the entire procedure before applying the interventions made her feel respected and confident that he would get well very soon. The next stage is called the Reflection or action stage. With the help of standard 2, I was effectively able to handle the patient. It says engagement in therapeutic and professional relationships by the nurse. It states that there is an urgency to communicate effectively and be respectful of the dignity of a person as well as her culture, values and beliefs. While handling the patient I followed this criterion which helped me to communicate with her easily and thereby be respectful to her dignity and culture. This made her comfortable with me and she was able to open her up in front of me with all the experiences of a life. This Standard also states the importance of recognition of patients as the experts in their experience of their life. Therefore while communication I gave her enough scope so that she can open up the experiences of her life and thereby I can develop an understanding of the different hardship she had gone through her life. Tthis helped me in developing my treatmen t approach. This standard also stated providing support to the patient and directing them to resources so that they can optimize health related decisions ("Standard of practice, Nursing and midwifery board of Australia", 2017). Here I educated her about the importance of proper diet and how proper diet can help for maintain her blood sugar level as well as her pain in the arthritis. The next standard that was followed by me was standard 4 called comprehensively conducting assessment. It states the importance of conducting assessments with a Holistic as well as culturally appropriate ("Standard of practice, Nursing and midwifery board of Australia", 2017). Therefore I mainly focused on making the patient comfortable mentally as well as physically so that the treatment I provide give the best outcome. Forcing a patient with interventions which are without his or her wish does not yield successful result. Therefore I followed culturally appropriate as well as holistic treatment methods which kept her internally peaceful and happy. Moreover, it also stated the importance of the use of assessment techniques to collect relevant and accurate information to inform practice. Besides the various important diagnostics that have been performed to measure her blood sugar level, I also took verbal consent from both the family members as well as the patient in documented form about the different assessments which were conducted. Moreover I also engaged in to effective communication with the patient to gain relevant data about her health and also followed medical history which was provided to us by her family members. It also states the importance of working in partnership with different experts to determine the factors that affect the health of the patient. Therefore I also took suggestions of doctors, podologist and Physiotherapist so that the care which is provided to her becomes comprehensive in nature. Therefore in my future practices also I will strictly follow each and every standards of the code in order to ensure the safest care to patients.
